Turbo powers up IS sedan range

Lexus is introducing a powerful and more economical 2.0-litre turbocharged engine to its IS range for 2016.

The Lexus IS 200t will anchor the IS range and provide more power and torque than the IS 250 model it replaces – 180 kW and 350 Nm versus the 153 kW and 252 Nm of the IS 250.

“The addition of this modern and highly efficient twin-scroll turbo engine to the IS range further cements its positioning as a luxury sports sedan. It’s a great combination.” said Lexus New Zealand’s General Manager of Product, Spencer Morris.

“Benefits include an improvement in the combined fuel consumption of 7.5 litres/100 kms and emissions of 175 grams/km, while the previous model IS 250 was rated at 9.2 L/100 kms and 213 g/km.”

The engine, in a slightly different tune, is already available in New Zealand in the NX 200t SUV. It is fitted with stop&start technology for fuel savings in urban driving.

New gauges display the effectiveness of the stop&start system, a first for a Lexus sedan.

“This engine makes the IS 200t an even stronger proposition for drivers who want a blend of performance, economy and driveability in a well-designed luxury vehicle,” said Mr Morris.

A new 8-speed automatic transmission makes the most of the IS 200t performance combined with multimode selection options. It can vary gear selection due to G forces, under braking, during cornering and when accelerating. Steering wheel mounted paddle shifters can be used for manual gear selection.

The IS 200t can be distinguished by HID head lights, or LED headlights on the Limited model, and a sportier look that’s firmly planted on the road. There are three new colours in the ten colour range; Caliente, Sonic Quartz and Cobalt.

The double-wishbone front suspension combined with the multi-link rear suspension and finely tuned electronic power steering provides an agile handling and road holding experience on a choice of 17” and 18” alloy wheels (grade dependent).

The F Sport further sharpens handling and road holding with the inclusion of Adaptive Variable Suspension, while different interior and exterior trim accentuate the F Sport’s more driver focused character.

The dual zone climate control air conditioning has touch sensitive electrostatic switches and the multimedia system includes audio, trip computer, navigation and phone information.

The IS 200t safety includes 10 airbags and the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management System which combines Anti-lock brake, Electronic brakeforce distribution and Electronic brake control systems to help avoid emergency situations.

Lexus Pre-crash safety system and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control are now standard across the range, while the F Sport and Limited models also get an electronic steering column adjustment with memory.

Satellite navigation and reversing camera, 60:40 split folding rear seats and power adjustable front seats are also standard on all IS 200t models.

The IS 200t will sell from between $73,900 and $86,400, depending on the model and sits alongside the existing two hybrid IS 300h variants and the IS 350 F Sport.
