Toyota launches 2012 Yaris

The third generation Toyota Yaris is now available in New Zealand

Toyota's new 2012 Yaris is offered with the choice of 1.3 litre and 1.5 litre engines, and five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota says it has refined Yaris’ two VVT-i equipped engines and its automatic transmission on the 1.5-litre model for improved driveability and increased fuel efficiency. Yaris’ 1.3 litre engine delivers 63kW of power at 6000rpm and 121Nm of torque at 4400rpm. The 1.5 litre engine gives 80kW at 6000rpm and 141Nm at 4200rpm.

Fuel efficiency has been improved by up to 6% (or 0.4 litres/100km) across the range, based on the ADR 81/02 combined cycle. CO2 emissions have been reduced by up to 8%, with all models under the 150g/km mark.

The Yaris has a 9.6-metre turning circle, short overhangs and well-tuned steering, which Toyota says are perfectly suited to the urban jungle.

The new chassis package builds on the stable platform supplied by Yaris’ increased body rigidity and larger footprint on the road. The wheelbase has been increased by 50mm.

The suspension hardware has been refined, with weight-saving innovations and special engineering to improve agility and ride comfort. Increasing power output from the Electric Power Steering (EPS) motor and the faster steering rack gear ratios improve manoeuvrability.

Yaris’s brakes have also been upgraded. The pedal travel is shorter and the pedal stroke has been optimised.

The new Yaris hatchback's safety equipment includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC) available across the range. Yaris also has ABS with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) and the latest-generation pump-up type Brake Assist.

All models have driver and passenger front, side, driver’s knee and front/rear curtain shield airbags as standard equipment. Toyota says the Yaris also has the latest design technology for whiplash injury reduction, pedestrian injury mitigation structures, and energy absorbing body structure and high strength body frame to help secure the cabin area in a collision.

A range of accessories is available with the 2012 Toyota Yaris, including a new body kit range consisting of front bumper spats, side skirts, rear bumper mudflaps and a rear door spoiler, teamed with a range of 15 inch alloy wheels.

Other new additions to the range include front and rear ParkAssist corner sensors, vest type front seat covers with neoprene construction, bright stitching and a large Yaris logo.

There's also a cargo liner, new floor mat retention security clip system, acrylic headlight, bonnet protectors and weathershields, and a towbar with a rating of 550kg unbraked and 900kg braked towing capacity.
