Production begins on all-new Mazda2

Mazda Motor Corporation has unveiled its all-new Mazda2, with production kicking off at its Hofu Plant No. 1 in Yamaguchi, Japan.

The all-new Mazda2 will be rolled out in global markets starting from Japan this autumn and is expected to go on sale in New Zealand at the end of the year.

Fully redesigned for the first time in seven years, the all-new Mazda2 will be the fourth in Mazda’s line-up of next-generation models – following the Mazda CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3 – to adopt the full range of Skyactiv technology and KODO-Soul of Motion design.

Mazda New Zealand managing director Andrew Clearwater says that after seven years of strong performance from the current Mazda2 there is certainly a high level of anticipation for the all-new one.

“The current model has proven to be an absolute star here in New Zealand and we expect that this new generation model will set the bar very high for the small compact market in New Zealand – it is an outstanding vehicle.”

He said the new Mazda2 will bring a level of functionality and will exceed expectations for a car of this class by evolving the concepts and technologies cultivated through the development of earlier next-generation products, and condensing them in a compact body.

“It is undeniably stunning to see in the metal, and when people get behind the wheel they will be blown away by its performance,” added Clearwater.

Developed based on the same engineering concepts as those in larger next-generation models, new Skyactiv engines, transmissions, body, and chassis, allow the all-new Mazda2 to provide both outstanding safety and eco-performance, and the brand’s trademark driving pleasure.

The model also features a wide range of cutting-edge technologies such as the Mazda Connect next-generation car connectivity system, and a wide range of advanced safety features that aid the driver in recognizing and responding to hazards.

With total sales of over 2.4 million units, the Mazda2 is one of Mazda’s core products. Starting with the launch of the original in 1996, the Mazda2 has brought new value to the subcompact segment every time it has been fully redesigned.

With this fourth generation Mazda2, Mazda again offers customers around the world a new interpretation of the compact car.
