New 1 Series for BMW

Video: BMW has released details on its 2012 1 Series, featuring new engines and larger dimensions

The next generation BMW 1 Series is bigger in size than its predecessor, and will offer a range of TwinPower turbocharged engines.

The 2012 1 Series is 85mm longer, and the rear track has been widened by 72mm, the front by 51mm. There's also 21mm more legroom, and 30L more boot space.

BMW has also refreshed its engine options, all turbocharged with BMW TwinPower turbo technology (twin-scroll turbo tech).

Both the 116i and the 118i are powered by the 1.6L turbo unit - with respective outputs of 100kW (134hp) and 125kW (168hp).

BMW will likely eventually add its new 2.0L turbo unit for higher output variants.

On the diesel front are the 116d, 118d and 120d with the 2.0L engine configured to deliver outputs of 85kW (114hp), 105kW (141hp) and 135kW (182hp), respectively. BMW will also offer an EfficientDynamics variant of the 116d (with the same output) that features a CO² emission quotient of 99 g/km.

Transmission options include an 8-speed automatic or 6-speed manual, with fuel-saving tech like stop-start ignition and regenerative braking.

The range will include the popular five-door hatchback, three-door hatch, coupe, cabriolet and possibly a Gran Turismo.

NZ specs and pricing to come later this year.
