Reid aims to consolidate A1 lead

New Zealand A1GP driver Jonny Reid heads into this weekend’s round of the World Cup of Motorsport determined to increase his points lead.

Reid and Black Beauty head the standings after last month’s NZ round at Taupo, though his margin over Switzerland and France is only two points.

The A1GP cars will contest Sprint and Feature races at Sydney’s Eastern Creek International Raceway on Sunday, February 3. Team Australia will field its recently confirmed lead driver, John Martin.

Currently, Australia is 18th in the championship standings, having scored four points so far this season, finishing ninth in the Sepang Feature race and the Taupo Sprint race.
Martin has experience of the Eastern Creek circuit from his Formula Ford days and is aiming for a strong result in front of his home crowd this weekend.

“I just need to qualify better so I don’t end up in the mess down the field,” he said.

“Hopefully Eastern Creek will be better for that and we can qualify towards the front and we’ll see what happens. I’ve been to Eastern Creek before so I know the circuit which is a bit of a bonus – I don’t have to learn that as well and it should be a good weekend for us.”

Reid says he likes the Eastern Creek track which is fast and flowing and suits his style better than Taupo; where he started the Sprint race from pole and went on to win it.

He blew the start of the Feature race but fought back magnificently to finish fourth. The combined results catapulted him past France and Switzerland – the latter had a disastrous Taupo weekend.
