McIntyre wins to close points gap

Reigning champion John McIntyre edges closer to series leader Kayne Scott with a BNT NZ V8s race win at Manfeild.

Reigning BNT NZ V8s champion, Ford Falcon racer John McIntyre, cut Kayne Scott’s series lead to just six points by winning the first race of the Manfeild round yesterday.

Pole-winner Craig Baird (Ford Falcon) opened a good lead over McIntyre who passed second-on-the-grid Andrew Anderson (Holden Commodore) at the race start.

“Third is a good place to start here,” said McIntyre. “Craig really had a good gap on me and I could see his car had pace.

“But then the safety car came out to help Anderson out of the gravel on the Dunlop sweeper and Craig had a poor restart which allowed me to sneak through.

“I really wanted to get a gap on Andy (Booth),” said McIntyre. “(My Falcon’s) not perfect but we can tweak the wet weather set-up if conditions remain the same.

“It’s nice to be on pole here at Manfeild and we’ll be looking to catch up further points on Kayne.”

Booth finished second in his Holden. “It was more than we expected really as we’d struggled in the wet during testing.

“But the team made some changes – I didn’t even want to know what – and the car was great. We’re hoping for another good result (on Sunday).”

Baird finished third after dropping back for a lap. “I dropped a wheel off which let the others past (but) we had good pace.”

Paul Manuell (Commodore) finished fourth with Scott fifth. Scott had started ninth after a chassis set-up miscue in qualifying.
