Loeb impresses in Formula 1 test drive

World Rally Champion gets to grips with Red Bull F1 car in"thank you" test session.

After completing a full throttle test in a Red Bull Formula 1 car in Spain this week, five-times world rally champion Sebastien Loeb says he wouldn’t like to take so much horsepower on to gravel forest roads.

Loeb drove the RB4, as part of a "thank you" from Red Bull for winning the 2008 World Rally Championship.

He had a shakedown run in the car at Silverstone, England, last week, and had a better idea of what to expect when he arrived in Spain.

Red Bull team personnel rated his Spanish drive as “an excellent performance.”

It wasn’t all pleasure, though. After spending most of the morning settling in and finding a good balance in the car, Loeb put in some serious laps in the afternoon, evaluating the Bridgestone slick tyres Red Bull will use in 2009.

Red Bull said he provided valuable data. Loeb is no stranger to circuit racing and has extensive sports racing car experience.

"I don't think I'd like to take this much horsepower into the forests," he said after the F1 test. "It was a great experience and I had fun, although I have to say that driving one of these cars is tougher physically than driving my rally car.

“Towards the end of the day, I began to get a good feel for the car and enjoyed the sensation of it moving around on the track.

“I have to say that the level of grip in the high speed corners is very impressive."
