Kimi gifted pole as penalties dished out

A tough weekend for F1 rivals Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher has seen McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen benefit to start the Hungarian GP from pole.

In a qualifying session like no other, both Alonso and Schumacher were handed 2s penalty times following previous infringements that have seen the title duel enter a new dimension with them both starting mid-field.

That left Kimi Raikkonen at the head of the standings and will start his 100th Grand Prix from pole. It is his 10th career pole and Team McLaren Mercedes 45th.

"That was a really good qualifying session and to come out with pole position is really great. The car has been quick all weekend, and I am confident that we have made an excellent choice with our Michelin tyres. I believe we have a very strong car for tomorrow, and I am looking forward to the race where we have every chance to win. The work we have done in testing has really made a difference and improved our package over the last two weekends," said Raikkonen
