MTA endorses emissions-based restrictions

The Motor Trade Association (MTA) is the latest industry organisation welcoming Government plans to restrict used imports as part of its climate change strategy, based on internationally recognised emission standards, rather than an arbitrarily selected age.

“It makes a lot more sense to [adopt] objective standards that define measurable improvements,” the MTA said. “To suggest otherwise is to endorse a ‘seat of the pants’ approach.”

The MTA will make a submission on the subject in March. Part of it will push for all importers of motor vehicles to be registered vehicle traders: “It becomes clearer every day that the objectives of measures introduced to address climate change can be frustrated by the openness of today’s importing environment.”
