Greening of Subaru won't compromise core values

March 22, 2007, 12.30pm. Subaru says in a global five-year plan that it wants to achieve higher levels of environmental performance while still providing “exciting and enjoyable” cars.

It’s introducing the R1e electric car for urban use and has big plans for its boxer turbo diesel engine (pictured).

The engine’s availability in Europe next year is expected to boost sales there by 40 percent over three years.

There are no immediate plans to introduce the motor here.

Meanwhile, US Subaru sales topped 200,000 for the first time in 2006
