But can you use it on the licence exam…?

Making its first appearance on a New Zealand-new vehicle, a parallel parking “assistant” that takes over the steering is a $1750 option on the new-model Volkswagen Touran people mover.

Parkscan uses ultrasonic sensors to steer into the space; all the driver has to do is use the accelerator and brake. At speeds below 30km/h the system begins scanning for possible parking spots each side of the car. When the driver finds a suitable space, he or she puts Parkscan to work by activating the indicator lights on the appropriate side and choosing reverse.
The system deactivates if the speed exceeds 7km/h or the driver takes over the steering.
