After Toyota USA’s announcement last week that it would recall 2.3 million vehicles and halt production of eight models, Toyota NZ has confirmed it will recall around 60 Avensis models in New Zealand. This is limited to European-built models.

Paul Carroll, General Manager of After Sales for Toyota New Zealand, said that all other models sold new in New Zealand, as well as all used imported Toyotas from Japan, were unaffected by the recall as the accelerator pedal used on these models was sourced from a different manufacturer than the affected units.

Toyota New Zealand is waiting for advice on individual Avensis units affected, but it is expected to number around 60 vehicles. The owners will then be contacted directly by the company.

“The risk of any owner encountering a problem is very small,” said Carroll, “as in the whole of Europe only 26 owners reported any problem and there were no accidents resulting from the issue.”
