Speaking at the Detroit Auto Show, Ford design chief J Mays gave the news that blue oval fans have been dreading.
“I wouldn’t be holding my breath for a rear-wheel drive Falcon,” Mays told Drive. “I think the chances are we will be all-wheel-drive.”
Mays said the final decision confirming the shift away from rear-wheel drive for Falcon would be made within six months.
Traditional large rear-wheel-drive vehicles have become less popular over the years, and the Falcon notched up its worst sales in its 50-year history in 2010.
The future of the Falcon looks grim as Ford focuses on its “One Ford” strategy, and the rear-wheel-drive Commodore seems to be favoured as its engineering and platform have been exported overseas.
In Detroit Ford rolled out 10 different cars based on its Focus small car platform.
