The concept car features a pugnacious grille, pronounced wheelarches – which may be toned down on the production car – and a purposeful, more aggressive air. It has 19-inch wheels and runs a 3.6-litre six-cylinder boxer engine.

Subaru says the Legacy Concept celebrates the model’s 20th anniversary and showcases the Legacy’s sporting capabilities. It’s the model that took the brand into World Championship rallying.

Subaru launched the Legacy in 1989, and builds it in Japan and Lafayette, Indiana, USA. To November 2008, it had built 3.6 million Legacies making it Subaru’s core model.

The Legacy Concept sits on a longer 2750mm wheelbase, and the four-seat interior has a high roofline and plenty of legroom for all passengers, the latter thanks to the extended wheelbase. In-car entertainment includes monitors in the centre console and the rear of the front seat headrests.

Pearl white leather seat upholstery gives off a blue sheen, and the door trims are in black metallic leather.

Subaru of New Zealand managing director, Graeme Woodlands, says the concept gives a glimpse of the new generation Legacy which will have “the driving dynamics of the premium European marques.

“A key breakthrough is that the new Legacy will offer the space and comfort of a large car with fuel economy comparable to many small cars available today.”
