This is a immaculate example of a very rare SL500.
Handling of the SL is hard to fault. Ride is superb, and the Mercedes blazes down a winding road with effortless ease, almost no body roll and a sensation that four big fat tires are out there somewhere, gripping the road tenaciously on your behalf. Steering is quick, precise and creamy-smooth in its assist, but without as much road feedback as you get with the Porsche or Maserati.
It's small but carefully engineered touches like this that define the SL500 and make it perhaps the most refined and complete real-world touring car in our test. It's a car for people who expect everything to work very well, and all at the same time.
Its roof is a masterpiece of engineering. It takes just 16 seconds to raise up, separate into four pieces, and fold into the trunk. The cleverest part is how the glass rear window flips over to nestle under the roof panel so the retracted roof takes up much less space and leaves enough room for a couple of medium-size suitcases-or golf bags-underneath. And to make stowing easier, the whole folded roof assembly lifts up at the touch of a button inside the trunk.
This vehicle will not leave you dissapointed.
