The new V12 supercar from Lamborghini drops weight, boosts power and performance, and is more efficient than its predecessor, the Murciélago.

The Aventador LP700-4, named after a courageous bull, weighs just 1575kg thanks to its carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) monocoque structure. The car’s set-up includes aluminium double wishbone suspension with a pushrod spring and damper concept, and a new seven-speed, single-clutch, robotised manual transmission called ISR (Independent Shifting Rods. The ISR will shift gears in 50 milliseconds.

Power comes from a 6.5-litre engine with an ouput of 700hp (515kW) and 690Nm (509 lb-ft) of torque, delivering an extra 8% of grunt. It will reportedly propel the car from 0 to 100kmh in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 350kmh.

CO2 emissions fall by around 20% compared with a Murciélago’s, at 398g/km.

The LP700-4 Aventador also features a Haldex all-wheel drive system.

Options will include a transparent engine cover, black-painted wheels and coloured calipers for the carbon-ceramic brakes, plus parking sensors and a stereo upgrade.

The MurciĂ©lago served Lamborghini for nine years, prompting Lamborghini’s CEO Stephan Winkelmann to describe the Aventador as “a jump of two generations in terms of design and technology”. He added, “It’s the result of an entirely new project, but at the same time it’s a direct and consistent continuation of Lamborghini’s brand values.”

The Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 will go on sale later this year.
