The 2009 Ford Fiesta features Ford’s edgy family design, with strong lines inside and out. And it proves that affordable and frugal can also be high tech, with stuff like voice control for the radio and Bluetooth connectivity as standard.

The 71kW/128Nm 1.4-litre auto scampers along very well round town and on more open roads, though it struggles a tad with steep hills and demanding swervery; if that sounds like your commute, check out the 1.6.

Otherwise Fiesta delivers impressively supple ride and a grown-up driving feel plus a practical interior.

We like the little extras, like the bag hooks in the boot, and the aux and USB ports tucked next to a handy iPod cubby, not to mention the five airbags and stability control. Though we do wonder how many will pay an extra $1000 for the hot magenta paint of our test car.

Overall Fiesta’s an impressive little beast, delivering good looks, plenty of functionality, and a five-star crash test rating. If you’re an undemanding driver you’ll love this 1.4.

Fiesta buyers will also consider the attractive Mazda2 or the dynamically excellent but ageing Suzuki Swift. To get this level of fancy tech you’d pay extra for a Fiat 500, while the more adaptable interior of Honda’s Jazz comes at a much higher price and without the safety benefits of stability control.
