Dunedin rising star takes his second win from two starts in the MTA Fprmula Ford races at the NZ Grand Prix meeting at Manfeild.
Dunedin driver John Whelan made a strong start and resisted pressure from Andrew Waite and Caine Lobb to win this morning's MTA Formula Ford race at Manfeild.
Whelan eventually won by 4.6 seconds from New Plymouth's Stefan Webling in a carbon copy of Saturday's race finish for the Kent pushrod-powered open-wheeler racing cars.
Matthew Wooding again placed third.
Lobb and Waite were scrapping over second when Lobb pitted to cure a car problems and resumed muinus the engine cover.
That left Waite to chase Whelan who was drawing away, but the Auckland's race turned sour when he spun as he turned into the apex of the sweeping corner that leads on to the main straight.
Waite recovered to finish eighth.
Whelan now leads the points standings.
