Volkswagen's new compact coupe

The NCC has made its world premiere at the auto show in Detroit

VW has debuted its New Concept Coupe (NCC) at the Detroit auto show.

The NCC is a full hybrid car likely to be based on the same platform as the Jetta.

The new concept features VW's 1.4-litre TSI engine delivering 150hp, matched to a seven-speed DSG gearbox, as well as an electric motor with 27hp. Powered by a lithium ion battery, the electric motor can propel the car on its own.

Performance is reported at 98g/km in CO² emissions, and the 0 to 100kmh sprint in 8.6 seconds. Top speed is 227kmh while delivering 4.2 litres/100km (45 mpg) in fuel economy.

The NCC comes in "Tungsten Silver Metallic" with bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights, turn signals and tail lights.

The NCC is 4.54m long, 1.78m wide and 1.41m tall. Fitted with 19-inch alloy wheels, the NCC comes finished with a Grigio Quartz (grey quartz) and Berry White leather interior.

Even though VW avoided to talk about a production version, reports are circulating that the NCC is expected to follow shortly after the introduction of the next Jetta sedan that's due to go on sale in late 2010 or early 2011.
