Phil is just too good

Whitianga racer Phil Towgood continues to dominate speedway Saloon Car title events in the inaugural season that the class has had full national status.

At Baypark Speedway on Saturday, the Chevrolet Corvette racer added the New Zealand Grand Prix title to the New Zealand Championship he won at Auckland’s Waikaraka Park in January.

Towgood led the 25-lap final from start to finish with Tauranga’s Brent McClymont moving forward from grid seven to pass Tirau teenager Michelle Wymer and grab second place in the last corner.

Behind Wymer, Tiger Woods’ racing caddy Steve Williams was fourth in his Ford Mustang ahead of Matamata’s Paul Cressey (Holden Monaro).

The saloon car title action continues this weekend with the North Island champs at Huntly.
