Revised start procedure for NZ V8s following big crash

Officials ban passing in high-speed corner after makeshift repairs to safety barriers

Drivers will do the first two laps of this afternoon’s re-started NZ V8s race behind the Safety Car and then won’t race till they get on to the back straight on lap three.

That’s the upshot from the multi-car crash that broke out midfield in the same race this morning.

The crash left several cars non-starters and drew acrimonious comments from some about the rules relating to the rolling start procedure (see earlier story).

Cars at the front of the grid were unaffected.

The move to delay racing till after cars have got around the high-speed Jennian Homes sweeper came in a petition from the NZ V8s drivers themselves. Officials have also banned passing in the sweeper after the Armco safety barriers were damaged in the big crash. The ban will apply to all categories not only V8s, for safety reasons.
