Porsche’s second generation mid-engined Boxster roadster, unveiled this week at the Los Angeles Motor Show, has new flat-six boxer engines that are bigger and more powerful but significantly more fuel efficient
Porsche says the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) double-clutch gearbox, available as an option on the Boxster and Boxster S, will further improve fuel economy.
Porsche has restyled the roadster’s nose and tail. New-design halogen headlights with integrated direction indicators are like those on the Carrera GT. New LED taillights taper to the outside, and rectangular foglights are standard.
The Boxster’s new 2.9-litre engine has 10 more horsepower than the 2.7 it replaces. Output now is 255bhp (188kW).
There’s a 15bhp lift for the Boxster S which now has a 200cc bigger, 3.4-litre, Direct Fuel Injection flat six delivering 310bhp (228kW).
The new cars have real muscle. Porsche says a six-speed manual Boxster will hit 100km/h in 5.9 seconds, and a Boxster S with PDK transmission and Launch Control (featured in the optional Sports Chrono Package Plus) will make the same dash in 5.0 seconds.
Porsche quotes fuel economy of 9.1 ltres/100km (31mpg) for a 2.9 Boxster with the PDK gearbox – 10 percent better than the old model with Tiptronic S automatic transmission.
It says the Boxster S with the PDK gives a 15 percent improvement over the previous Tiptronic model, delivering 9.4 litres/100km (30.1mpg).
The seven-speed PDK shifts gears up to 60 percent faster than a conventional automatic, and replaces the Tiptronic S automatic. Despite its two extra gears, it weighs 10kg less than the Tiptronic S.
Porsche says a PDK-equipped Boxster will reach 100km/h 0.1 seconds faster than a manual six-speed version.
The optional Sports Chrono Package Plus featuring Launch Control offers maximum acceleration from rest and also a Race Track Gearshift Strategy for ultra-fast gear changes. It’s exclusive to PDK models and reduces 0-100km/h times a further 0.2 seconds.
