Mercedes-Benz is adding to its E-Class family with a new convertible that will replace the CLK drop-top

The German automaker has been light on official details, except these official photos of the four-seater E-Class Cabriolet that will go on sale in Europe in January 2010, followed by other markets laterin the year.

Based on the new E-Class Coupe, the convertible version gets an electrically operated fabric roof instead of a retractable hardtop. Other changes include the redesigned rear wings and trunk lid.

The retractable wind spoiler on the top of the windshield of the 2010 E-Class Convertible is called Aircap. When driving topless pops out and works in conjunction with a rear deflector to help direct wind over the passenger compartment.

Engines will be carried over from the E-Class Coupe, with four, six and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel units, and a choice of manual and auto gearboxes.

The new E-Class Cabriolet will make its debut at the Detroit Motor Show next month.
