Video: Mini and Volkswagen have announced their intention to enter a team into the World Rally Championship

Volkswagen has officially unveiled the Polo R WRC hot hatch.

Set to enter the World Rally competition in 2013, the Polo features a turbo-charged 1.6-litre TSI engine that develops approximately 221kW (296hp).

The car is equipped with an all-wheel drive system, a sport-tuned suspension and an aerodynamic body kit.

According to Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen, "We look forward to this new challenge and are working on this project with the same passion with which we won the Dakar Rally in the past three years."

Meanwhile, Mini recently revealed its Mini Countryman WRC car.

At the heart of the S2000-spec Mini Countryman is the BMW Motorsport-developed 1.6-litre, fourcylinder Di turbo-charged engine. The power transmission takes place via an Xtrac 6-speed, sequential gearbox, and the chassis has been fitted with a roll cage developed by Prodrive.

The team is starting off with a limited schedule in the WRC this year, before taking on the big boys of Ford and Citroen in 2012.
