Lexus NZ debuts diesel LX 450d

Lexus New Zealand’s LX range is the first Lexus in New Zealand to debut a diesel engine, expanding the offering of this flagship SUV line-up.

Until now Japan’s premiere luxury brand has only offered the V8 petrol powered LX 570, which will continue. But with more than 70 percent of sales in this area of the market going to diesel vehicles, Lexus now has an opportunity to compete in the total luxury SUV market.

The LX range has received major changes to the exterior styling with only the door panels carrying over and extensive refinements throughout the interior, including a full suite of safety, for the ultimate premium SUV experience.

The LX 450d receives a six-speed transmission for improved performance and efficiency and has achieved a EURO 5 emissions rating. The LX 450d is powered by a 4.5-litre twin-turbo diesel engine with an output of 200kWs and 650Nm of torque.

The latest LX 570 is powered by a 5.7-litre V8 petrol engine and achieves a greater power output of 270kW, but less torque at 530Nm than its diesel counterpart. It has an improved combined fuel consumption of 14.4L/100km with the aid of the new eight-speed automatic transmission.

The LX 450d comes as a five seater, while the LX 570 has a maximum capacity for eight people.

There are six drive modes to select from which tailor powertrain and suspension response and both LX models are fitted with paddle shifters.

The LX is framed by the signature one-piece Lexus spindle grille with new front and rear bumpers, revised roof rails and side step designs for a contoured and chiselled exterior body posed on distinct 21” 10-spoke aluminium wheels for the LX 570 and prominent 18” aluminium wheels for the LX 450d.

Expressive LED headlights, sequential turn signals, fog lights and Daytime Running Lights feature strongly on the LX while two new colours – Titanium and Deep Blue – make up the seven exterior colour offering.

The LX interior has risen to higher levels of luxury with Shimamoku wood and satin chrome detailing, LED ambient lighting, genuine leather and wood three-spoke steering wheel (heated on LX 570), new look instrument cluster, a larger multi-information display and the introduction of an analogue clock – all cues pointing to the height of finesse.

There is an upgraded multimedia system with a grand 12.3” screen centred on the dash, wireless charger and for the first time on the LX, a colour head-up display which projects simplified vehicle data such as current speed, navigation commands, audio settings or other selected data directly onto the windshield in the driver’s field of view.

For the LX 570 there are 11.6” dual screens for the rear seat entertainment feature and a 19 speaker Mark Levinson premium audio package.

Lexus Safety System + has been added to the already comprehensive safety package including Pre-crash safety system, All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with sway warning function and Adaptive High Beam. Also new on the 2016 LX is a tyre inflation system and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Other safety features include Emergency Stop Signal and a ten air bag package including driver and front passenger and knee air bags, front and rear seat side air bags and curtain air bags.

Both LX models have a lockable Torsen torque sensing centre limited slip differential to distribute the power to the front and rear axles. There is a double wishbone suspension in the front and four-link rear suspension with active height control and adaptive variable suspension.

Both models are rated to tow 3500kgs (braked) and can accommodate up to 1267 litres of luggage if all rear seats are folded flat.

In addition to the six drive modes, there is CRAWL Control, Multi-Terrain select, Anti-Lock Braking with Electronic Brake-force Distribution and Brake Assist, Active Traction Control, Vehicle Stability Control, Trailer Sway Control, Hill-start Assist Control and Downhill Assist Control.

The anti-theft system includes an engine immobiliser, intruder sensor, alarm and gradient sensor. The reversing camera is supplemented by four front and four rear clearance sensors and a Multi-Terrain Monitor offering a variety of different views utilising the four on-board cameras to give a view of the LX’s immediate surroundings for use in off road situations, while a Panoramic View mode is available on road, providing a bird’s eye view of the vehicle.

Notable features on the LX 450d include smooth leather seats, powered front seats, second row seats with recline and power slide adjustment, genuine leather and aluminium shift lever, and electronic tilt and telescopic steering wheel with memory, four zone independent heating and air conditioning, electro-chromatic inside rear vision mirror, cool box, rear sun shades, satellite navigation, DVD and audio system with Bluetooth and 9 speakers, backing monitor with guidelines and tonneau cover.

There is also smart entry and start system with card key, illuminated side steps, power back door, privacy side and rear glass, roof rails and rain sensing wipers.

The LX 570 adds a moon roof, LED deck lamp, electrostatic touch sensor LED front interior lights, third row seating for three passengers (bringing total capacity up to eight people), front and second row seat ventilation, and removes the tonneau cover.
