South Auckland man Mark Grey has dreamt of driving his Holden VT Station Wagon 380,000km so he could say he had driven his Holden to the moon.
His love for Holden was cultivated as a young boy and he is now a strong contender for being the most devoted, as the much loved car brand celebrates its 60th birthday.
Mark’s obsession with Holden’s started from an early age with fond memories of a 6m caravan hooked to the back of his Dad’s HG Holden Station Wagon as they headed away on holiday.
Looking out the back window and watching the nose of the caravan just centimetres away as they travelled along the coast is ingrained in his memory.
Those early years were to lay the foundation for what has become a real passion and love for the Holden motor vehicle.
Founding member of the Early Holden Club in the 80s, Mark has owned eight Holden’s over the years, with an award winning 1953 FX Holden Ute as part of his collection.
He has also spent five years restoring his pride and joy and it now drives like brand new.
“My family bought me a dust cover for my Ute but it never goes on it because I like coming out to the shed and just looking at it,” explains Mark Grey.
But Mark says that it was a VL Holden Commodore that he had his most memorable journey in.
“My wife Trish and I drove from Auckland down the West Coast of the South Island to the bottom of the country on our honeymoon that was a great road trip.”
Mark Grey has been chosen by Holden as an important part of its 60 Years Loyal campaign, a celebration of the car brand’s momentous milestone and the interwoven history between Holden and Kiwis.
The iconic automotive brand is calling for Kiwis to share their favourite memories, milestones and photos of their Holden’s, as it builds an interactive timeline of the shared history.
Holden New Zealand managing director, Jeff Murray, says looking back at where we have been helps us to see how far we have come and where we are heading in the future.
“Our 60th birthday offers not only an opportunity for us to reminisce but we also wanted to give all New Zealanders the chance to recount their fondest memories of Holden,” says Murray.
“Speaking with a variety of people throughout New Zealand it becomes very apparent that Kiwis have some great stories about their Holden experiences.”
We thought this would be the perfect opportunity to unearth the best yarns, pull out the old photos, dust off the memorabilia and relive the legendary road trips.”
“Having been a part of the fabric of the Kiwi community for so many years means Holden’s history is New Zealand’s history and we want to celebrate our 60th with the whole country as we also look ahead to another 60 years of Holden”.
Kiwis can share their memories online at the Holden NZ website, with one lucky Holden fan being chosen to win a fully restored Holden Monaro.
