See the Indy 500 racing car in Auckland
The Indy Racing League single-seater racing car that New Zealander Scott Dixon drove to victory just two months ago in the Indy 500, is set to take the prime position at this year’s GT Radial Speedshow.
Taking place at the ASB Showgrounds in Auckland’s Greenlane on 20-21 September, the GT Radial Speedshow celebrates motorsport in New Zealand with a variety of vehicles, teams and drivers confirmed for the popular motorsport expo.
Speedshow organiser Keith Sharp says he’s absolutely thrilled to have secured Dixon’s Indy-winning car for Speedshow.
“It’s been an incredible few days as I worked with Scott’s team, Target Chip Ganassi Racing, to confirm shipping arrangements and secure sponsorship to support this initiative,” says Sharp, who developed Speedshow for New Zealand after seeing similar motorsport-oriented expos overseas.
Dixon’s car, a 650hp normally-aspirated 3.5-litre Honda V8 running 100 per cent ethanol in a Dallara monocoque chassis, will be in New Zealand for limited time with the GT Radial Speedshow the primary opportunity for race fans to see it up close.
With more than 100 exhibitors confirmed for Speedshow, Sharp says this year’s event offers motorsport fans a huge variety to see and do.
“We’ve also just confirmed with Shell New Zealand that their Ferrari Formula 1 car will be at Speedshow – so you could say we’ve got the world’s fastest oval car and the world’s fastest circuit car! These bring an international flavour to our other key exhibit, the Exide-sponsored retrospective of Ken Smith’s racing cars as we celebrate the commencement of Ken’s 51st consecutive racing season.
"There’s a real synergy to the Scott Dixon car being alongside Ken Smith’s, given Ken’s considerable efforts in establishing Scott’s career overseas.
“But it’s not all about track racing. The first car to run at 200mph in New Zealand, Price Motorsport’s top alcohol dragster, will be on show. Western Springs Speedway is launching their 2008-09 season with championship-winning sprint and TQ cars.
"New Zealand V8 racing champion John McIntyre reveals his new Ford V8 and we’ve got all kinds of other motorsport-related aspects to the show such as a huge race simulator area and the incredible paintings of motorsport artist Don Packwood. Expect to see rally cars, hot rods, modern and classic single-seaters and drifters. If you’ve ever thought about getting into motor racing, this is a perfect show to find out what classes of racing – serious or fun – are on offer.”
