New Zealand ace Craig Baird has put his VIP Pet Foods Porsche 911 RSR on pole for tomorrow’s Toyo Tires 24 Hours of Dubai in the Middle East.
Baird set the fastest time in the thrilling closing stages of the two-hour qualifying session.
In the race he’ll be co-driven by Australians Tony and Klark Quinn and Jonathan Webb.
The Proton Competition-Porsche driven by Danes Allan Simonsen and Lars Erik Nielsen, German Christian Ried and double Porsche Supercup champion, Briton Richard Westbrook.
The Konrad Motorsport-Porsche with Jeroen Bleekemolen, Wolfgang Kaufmann, Franz Konrad and Michael Schrey will start third.
“I set a fast lap time early in the session, but it got pretty exciting in the closing stages as lap times improved (as the track and air temperatures dropped,” Baird said.
“It was a matter of luck, anyone who had a clean lap was able to improve his time. This is what eventually got us pole position.” Photo caption: Craig Baird (left) at Sandown 2007 with fellow Kiwi star Paul Radisich.
