The new Honda Accord Euro features fresh styling and fuel efficient credentials
The 2011 Accord Euro receives new styling to the front bumper and grille, headlights, detailing on the boot lid and rear lights, along with the new wheel design, giving the car more of a sporty appearance.
The 2.4-litre i-VTEC petrol engine boasts 148kW at 7000 rpm with a peak torque of 234Nm at 4400 rpm matched to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed automatic transmission, depending on the model. The 5-speed automatic transmission has a straight ‘P R N D S' gate: Racing inspired steering wheel mounted shift paddles can be used in D and S modes, providing instant sequential shift mode or full manual shifting.
An official fuel economy figure of 8.9 L/100km for both the manual and automatic sedan has been recorded, while the Tourer’s is 9.1 L/100km. Honda says that in its local real-world driving Optimal NZ Drive Test, the Euro sedan achieved figures of 6.49 L/100km and 6.53 L/100km for the manual and automatic respectively, while the Tourer was impressive at 6.36L/100km. Both variants also performed very well at the recently held AA Energywise Rally with the Sedan achieving 7.54L/100km and the Tourer 7.50L/100km.
The mid-size sedan's handling characteristics are a result of the low centre of gravity, a wide track and front double wishbone and rear multilink suspension with variable rate dampers.
Along with its 5 Star Euro NCAP safety rating, the Accord Euro features the innovative Motion Adaptive Power Steering system, which reportedly detects instability and loss of grip during cornering, on uneven surfaces and under braking, and provides an intuitive prompt through the steering wheel to reinforce steering in the correct direction to correct the problem.
Standard safety features include front seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiters, dual stage front airbags, driver and front passenger side airbags with Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), full length curtain airbags and ISOFIX fittings and tether anchor points for secure child-seat fixture. There are also front seat active headrests.
Other highlights on the Accord Euro's specification list include a key-fob operated window and sunroof open/close function and memory seat key link; dual-zone automatic climate control with rear seat vents; Trailer Stability Assist; and a glovebox and centre console storage box with a feed from the climate control system enabling drinks to be cooled or warmed.
The Euro L Sedan and Tourer models add leather interior, sunroof, front fog lamps, power front seats, front and rear parking sensors, rain sensing wipers and auto headlights. The Tourer also features dark privacy glass in the rear and a retractable tonneau cover.
The Accord Euro RSport model comes with front and rear Sport bumpers and side skirts.
