Whincup wins tough battle in Bahrain

Jamie Whincup took another race win at the V8 Supercars event in Bahrain, Middle East, on the weekend

The TeamVodafone driver has now made it four wins from four starts.

An slow start to Saturday's 200km race at the Bahrain International Circuit allowed Ford's Mark Winterbottom to lead the pack into turn one, while Whincup went from pole position to fifth.

But the 27-year-old two-time driver's champion managed to climb through the field, getting back in front by lap eight of the 37-lap race.

Ford Performance Racing driver Winterbottom stayed close to Whincup, battling it out and almost regaining the lead when Whincup stalled coming out of the pits in lap 28.

New Zealand's 20-year-old Shane van Gisbergen did well, racing from 14th to his second podium in as many weeks with a third place finish in his Stone Brothers Falcon.

The championship's next event is the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide from March 14.
