When a record isn’t a record

Ian Clapperton holds the new lap record for Pro 7 (Mazda RX-7) race cars at Invercargill’s Teretonga Park – or does he?

Dunedinite Clapperton was credited with a new lap record for the rotary-powered coupes after running a one minute 10.44 second tour of the fast Southland track in last weekend’s race meeting.

That time was faster than Christchurch racer Eddie Bell’s long-standing mark, but officials say now that Clapperton’s lap wasn’t a record because of the type of RX-7 he was racing.

Clapperton was running in the new Open Class incorporated into this season’s Pro 7 championship, and with fellow Dunedin driver, Scott Cameron, is competing by invitation and can’t score series points.
The Open Class has been introduced to increase grid sizes if South Island Mazda RX-7 racing and allows any RX-7 to race with vehicles of similar performance.

So though Clapperton may have set the fastest time for the new Open Class, Bell’s lap record of one minute 10.97 seconds, set in 2004, still stands for championship-elligible cars.
