Reigning MTA Formula Ford Champion, John Whelan, is pinning his hopes on a Toyota Racing Series drive next season on the next step on the way toward his ambition of racing Australian V8 Supercars.
“There seems to be a misconception about what I’m interested in doing with motorsport,” he said this week. “I want to make a career out of the sport and I feel as if getting into TRS next season will be the next step toward doing that.”
Whelan said he would like to be able to carry on racing with Motorsport Solutions after his successful campaign with the outfit in Formula Fords. “I’m happy with the way they do things and I know all the guys there, so it would make sense to do it [TRS] with them, but I’m not sure what John’s [team owner John Crawford] plans are yet.”
Whelan raced a TRS car for the first time in the non-championship races at Hamilton. “I really enjoyed it and felt confident in the car, but unfortunately a few – mechanical problems intervened.”
