Westy receives Rally NZ scholarship

Chris West has received a scholarship to compete in the production car class of the World Championship Rally of New Zealand from November 17-19 in his Subaru Impreza WRX STI.

Chris West has received a scholarship to compete in the production car class of the World Championship Rally of New Zealand from November 17-19 in his Subaru Impreza WRX STI.

West was presented the scholarship award at the weekend's " Rally NZ Promo Day" at the venue for this year's Super Special Stages and Servicing facilities at "Mystery Creek" south of Hamilton.

At each round of the Production Car World Rally Championship, the event organisers are allowed to nominate two local crews to compete against the international crews contesting the whole series.

"This is a fantastic opportunity to match ourselves against the best there is and there's no better way of doing it than in your own country" said Westy.

"It's the first time we've really had the opportunity to go up against the top international Group N drivers," said Aucklander Westy, the 2004 national champion.

"In the past the WRC event has always been a round of the New Zealand championship and of course we've had to focus on that."

"Now with the opportunity we've been given by Propecia and Rally NZ, we can just go flat out and drive as hard as possible to see how we measure up."

During last year's Rally of NZ, Westy and co-driver Garry Cowan matched stage times with several of the leading Production Championship crews, and held a top three position in the class.

In November Westy will be competing against leading international drivers including current champion Toshi Arai of Japan, Marcos Ligato of Argentina, and current series leader Nasser Al-Attiyah.

In the meantime, Westy's next challenge is the final round of the national championship being held at Nelson on September 23 and 24.

Following that the Subaru NZ Rally Team plans to do some extensive testing to fine tune the Impreza WRX STI for an assault on the PCWRC class at Rally NZ.

"We'll be waving the flag for Subaru and New Zealand against the world's best. I can't wait."
