Aucklander Allan Wakeling has clinched the Sprint Car portion of the Western Springs Speedway National Series.
The Saturday-Monday double header run at the Springs last week saw Wakeling score a flag-to-flag win in the Saturday night main event leading home New Zealand champion Kerry Jones (Waiuku) and Hamilton’s Greg Pickerill.
Track record holder Dean Brindle (Hamilton) had been Wakeling’s nearest challenger in the series but failed to finish the Saturday race.
On Monday’s extremely slick track it was Jones who won a slow paced race from the front row of the grid ahead of Jamie McDonald and Brindle with Wakeling back in fourth spot.
That was good enough for the Koken Tools J&J pilot to establish an unassailable lead in the series with one round remaining at the season finale on March 3.
“I knew I only had to finish seventh or better,” said Wakeling. “But it was nearly a horror story when McDonald got into Kerry (Jones) in the first corner and there was a big tangle.”
Wakeling leads the eight round series with 136 points ahead of Jones who climbed from fourth to second last weekend after a slow start to his campaign and now has 107pts. A battle for third sees the Hamilton duo of Pickerill on 96 with Brindle on 95. McDonald is next on 65pts.
