Wairarapa Rally Update, 3.45pm.

Martin out for weekend.

Taihape driver Brett Martin, who had been running second before crashing on SS4, has withdrawn from the Wairarapa Rally and won’t start tomorrow’s Leg 2.

Martin rolled his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9. The impact was severe enough to break the driver’s seat.

Tapper has Fiesta round in bag

Aucklander Mark Tapper is on target to win the Ford Fiesta challenge section of Leg 1 of the Wairarapa Rally after overcoming a 40-second penalty.

Tapper incurred the penalty after clocking in four minutes later for Special Stage 1.

Since then he has pegged back the time with a searing drive and leads the category from Chris Lange and Kayne Barrie heading into the final special stage.

Cook set for Kiwi 2 win

A strong drive has set up victory in the Kiwi 2 two-wheel drive class for Wellingtonian Aaron Cook.

Honda Jazz Type R pilot Cook has a handy lead over Dave Strong (Honda Civic), and is running ninth overall, one place ahead of Mark Tapper’s Ford Fiesta with one stage to run.

Andrew Keighley runs third in Kiwi 2 with another Strong-built car, a Honda CRX del Sol.
