V8 Supercars: from one Jason to another

Former Bathurst winner Jason Bargwanna will replace Kiwi Jason Richards in the Tasman Motorsport team in the 2009 Australian V8 Supercar Championship

He’ll drive the #3 Sprint Gas Holden Commodore alongside Greg Murphy in the two-car team. Richards is moving to Brad Jones Racing.

Bargwanna didn’t have a Supercar drive in 2008 and instead raced in the Australian Mini Challenge series. “The team I was due to drive for in 2008 closed up shop just before the start of the season,” he says.

“It was so close to Clipsal (the series’ opening round) that all the seats were full (in other teams). There was no choice but to sit the year out and hope for a drive in 2009.”

Team chief Jeff Grech says Tasman chose for his proven speed and experience, and the potential to pair two Bathurst winners – Murphy has won there four times – for the 2009 enduros.

Bargwanna’s V8 career includes four round wins, 13 podiums, 42 top 10 finishes and a Bathurst win. He says racing V8s again in 2009 is “sensational and not taken for granted.

"I never doubted that I would be back in a fulltime seat, I'm a survivor in this sport and there are many years of V8s left in me. To say I’m excited about 2009 is an understatement. I’m motivated more than ever and confident that the team will be a force in 2009.

“Sprint Gas Racing is a team on the up. It’s exciting to be a part of it. Bathurst showed what (its) cars are capable of. The potential is there, we’ve just got to unlock it.”
