International competition in the Sprint Car division gets straight into gear with the opening of the Western Springs Speedway season in Auckland this Saturday night.
Little Rock, Arkansas racer Ricky Logan flies in this week to begin another summer campaign on New Zealand speedway ovals.
Logan will race for Aucklander Keith Simpson in a brand new J&J chassis with a Don Ott-prepared engine.
“I’m picking Ricky up from the airport on Thursday and he’ll stay till the last meeting at the springs,” says Simpson.
“We haven’t talked about it yet, but he’ll probably do the New Zealand Champs (at Baypark on January 4-5) and we’ll go to Palmerston North and Christchurch as well.”
Logan raced for Simpson and several other New Zealand teams last year.
In February, he smashed the Western Springs lap record with an 11.772-second lap ¬– the first electronically timed sub-12 second lap – in qualifying for the New Zealand Champs.
“It’s a brand new J&J car with the engine that Ricky ran at Knoxville (in the USA) this year,” says Simpson.
“We gave the car (pictured right) a shakedown at the springs practice last weekend. One of the crew guys drove it.”
The red #10 machine runs in the colours of Lucas Oils and South Auckland Truck Sales.
“It looks like being a really big year for Sprint Car racing in New Zealand and Ricky’s really keen to do well here,” says Simpson.
“He didn’t have such a great year up in the States and he’s got unfinished business here in New Zealand.”
