Turner optimistic despite Leg 1 retirement

June 2, 2007, 9.15pm. Dylan Turner heads into tomorrow’s second leg of the Wairarapa Rally in optimistic mood, despite retiring from Leg 1 with gearbox problems.

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 driver had looked set for a good result when the car refused to select gears as he toured towards the start of Special Stage 4.

Turner jammed it in third gear and trickled his way through the test before retiring.

He’d had a spin in SS3 when he went for second gear and couldn’t engage it. It was a hint of worse to come, though he didn’t recognise it at the time.

“I spun and stalled and lost about 15 seconds. When I came out of service (heading towards SS4), the car wouldn’t select any gears, so I jammed it in third and drove through the stage.

“It was a bit of a bummer.

“But tomorrow I’m hoping for a good result.”
