Townsend North Island Midget champ

Bruce Townsend leads an Auckland clean sweep of the North Island Midget Car championships.

March 11, 2007, 7.20pm. Aucklander Bryce Townsend won the 30-lap North Island Midget Car Championship race at Palmerston North last night.

In the first major Midget Car title raced at the inner city Palmerston North oval in more than 30 years Townsend drove his Aggressor-Hawk to victory ahead of newly crowned national champion Michael Pickens at the wheel of Wayne Green’s car.

Former national champ Michael Kendall and Auckland drivers swept the top six places with Shayne Alach, Steven Currie and Shaun Insley next.

In other open wheel title action on Saturday night the North Island TQ Midget Champs at the banked Gisborne oval was won by 2005 New Zealand champ Scott Joblin (Eltham).

In a 20-lapper that went flag-to-flag without interruption Joblin led home Napier’s Craig Todd and young Auckland racer Chris Gwilliam.
