Titles up for grabs Saturday

Speedway Midget, Sprint Car and TQ Midget championships will be decided this weekend.

March 9, 2007, 10.30pm. All three of NZ speedway racing’s premier open wheel divisions are preparing for North Island Championship action this Saturday night.

At Mount Maunganui’s Baypark Speedway the North Island Sprint Car title is up for grabs with a 20-car field that includes defending champion Allan Wakeling (pictured), newly crowned national champ Jamie McDonald and NZ GP winner Dean Brindle.

The title will be decided over two 15-lap preliminary races and a 25-lap final.

Midget Cars are headed for Arena Manawatu in Palmerston North for their North Island title. Michael Pickens has arranged a drive in Wayne Green’s car as he seeks to add the North Island crown to the NZ title he won at Christchurch recently.

Other front runners include Aucklanders Carl Worboys, Graham Standring, Steven Currie, Lance Beale and Bryce Townsend and Hawke’s Bay racer Jimi Quin.

Gisborne is the venue for the North Island TQ Midget Car Champs on Saturday night where Taranaki’s Scott Joblin is the defending champion.
