Three-year plan for Duff

Evergreen Christchurch Sprint Car racer Steve Duff’s driving duties will take second priority next season, when Steve’s Scorpion Racing Team switches its emphasis to circuit racing where his son Jamie (17) will contest the national championship with a 2004 model Van Diemen chassis imported from Australia.

The younger Duff has been putting in mileage at the Powerbuilt Raceway in a leased car in preparation for the summer race season.

Former kart racing and RX7 champion Hamish Cross has been working with the team as Jamie’s mentor. Cross recently won the Christchurch Kart Club’s ESWA Radiant Heating Enduro, together with his friend Jason Richards.

Steve Duff says that the team has a three-year plan for Jamie, comprising of a learning season in Formula Ford, a follow-up season in Formula Ford and the third season, where he will make the switch to the Toyota Racing Series.

Scorpion Racing has bought the Tatuus Toyota Racing Series car formerly raced by Andy Knight, and Cross, who previously raced for the ESWA outfit but missed the most recent season, will drive the car next summer.

Jamie Duff will continue in kart racing and will take in Sprint Car meetings as well as racing the Formula Ford next season.
