Cunningham wraps up international TRS series after dominating Taupo round.
Mitch Cunningham wrapped up the international section of the Toyota Racing Series at the A1GP meeting at Taupo today.
Cunningham won all three TRS heats this weekend, the first with a last-lap passing move, the second in a blur of controversy, and the third by an emphatic gap.
The race two controversy was over whether he and fellow front row starter, Will Stevens, had jumped the start.
They crossed the finish line in first and second and later were told they’d been docked five seconds for jumping the start. That gave the top two placings to Michael Burdett and Sam MacNeill.
Then, overnight, the judge of fact changed his mind after viewing video footage, Cunningham and Stevens were reinstated and Cunningham took the international title.
Race three, for the Denny Hulme Trophy, was a Cunningham walkover, and he won from Stevens with Burdett taking third after a strong passing move on Irishman William Buller.
Though Cunningham was never challenged, there was plenty of action further back, with Daniel Jilesen fighting his way through to fifth.
