Tasman Motorsports Group Signs Daniel Gaunt For V8 SuperTourers

New Zealand’s newest V8 SuperTourer Team, Tasman Motorsports Group (TMG) has named Daniel Gaunt as its driver for the 2012 season.

Gaunt (26) and the TMG Ford FG Falcon V8 SuperTourer plan to join the championship at Hampton Downs for Round 4, June 1-4.

TMG Team Principal Steve Horne says the signing of Gaunt was a coup for the team.

“Daniel is a very talented driver and is a proven winner. His understanding of all aspects of racing both in and out of the car is invaluable. He will bring a lot to the team,” says Horne.

Gaunt who is also competing the Australian Carrera Cup Championship and currently sits third in the points standings says he’s very pleased to have signed with TMG for the V8 SuperTourers.

“Steve and TMG have accomplished a lot in motorsport, particularly in the US in IndyCar. I’m a big fan of American racing and follow a number of drivers like Tony Kanaan and Helio Castroneves that Steve has paved the way for, assisting in getting them to where they are today. I’m very excited to be involved in this next chapter of TMG.”

Gaunt says the TMG Ford Falcon FG V8SuperTourer will suit his driving style.

“I’ve driven a V8 SuperTourer and it’s a lot like a GT car or a Carrera Cup Porsche which I’m used to driving already. I’ll be looking for some strong performances once we get underway with our championship.”

Horne says Gaunt will be joined later in the season by a yet to be named co-driver for the three endurance rounds.

“Because of the very large interest in V8 SuperTourers internationally, my phone has been ringing off the hook! I’m talking to a number of drivers from around the world to partner Daniel in the endurance races.”

“We’re realistic about our goals for this year. We’ll obviously been joining the series at one of the last sprint rounds, before making an assault on the endurance races, we’ll have a good team around us, and it’ll put us in good stead for the start of the 2013 season.”
