A scorching drive through Special Stage 3 has seen Mark Tapper overcome a 40-second penalty and take the Ford Fiesta challenge lead.
June 2, 2007, 12.15pm. Mark Tapper has fought back from a 40-second penalty to catch his Ford Fiesta challenge rivals and take the class lead jointly.
The Aucklander incurred the penalty for arriving four minutes late for the start of Special Stage 1 near Pongaroa this morning.
He carved chunks out of that time by posting fastest Fiesta times on the first two tests, to trail class leader Chris Lange by 22.1 seconds going into SS3.
And in SS3, Tapper was absolutely on fire, beating Lange by 22.1 seconds to take the joint class lead heading into this afternoon’s three special stages.
Kayne Barrie is third, 4.9 seconds behind.
In the Kiwi 2 two-wheel drive class Aaron Cook leads in his Integra Type R-engined Honda Jazz and is a sensational ninth overall.
Dave Strong runs second in a Honda Civic R.
