Tander wins at Phillip Island

Defending champion Garth Tander snatched a final-lap win from Craig Lowndes in the Phillip Island 500 in Australia yesterday

Tander and Will Davison claimed the dramatic victory when leader Lowndes suffered tyre problems on the final lap.

Ford driver Lowndes passed Tander with 15 of the 113 laps remaining and was cruising to the finish line until turn six of the final lap of the V8 Supercars event.

With his front tyre flapping, Lowndes had no let Tander through and the Holden went on to win by 2.6 seconds.

Mark Winterbottom and Steve Richards were third in their Ford Performance Racing Falcon.

The only all-Kiwi driver pairing in this weekend’s Phillip Island 500 V8 Supercar race, John McIntyre and Daniel Gaunt, finished 17th driving the #4 Irwin-SP Tools Ford for Stone Brothers Racing.

SBR team-mates Shane van Gisbergen and Alex Davison finished the 113-lap race in tenth position, with McIntyre and Gaunt completing one less lap in what was a relatively fault-free drive.
