Smith shines on rally return

June 2, 2007, 2.15pm. Taranaki driver Glenn Smith, running in today’s Leg 1 of the Wairarapa Rally to get some seat time in preparation for tomorrow’s first round of the North Island championship, is setting the pace among the non-national championship drivers.

Smith has the Sam Murray-prepared Subaru Impreza WRX STi fifth in the overall classification after Special Stage 4 of the Wairarapa Rally.

The rally is several events in one, and the first round of the North Island series runs as a category in tomorrow’s second leg.

Smith, a former national championship regular, is running a limited 2007 programme that includes the North Island series.

He and co-driver Colin Smith (no relation) haven’t rallied this season and are using today’s six stages to get some competitive kilometres.

Smith was fifth-fastest on SS4, behind car owner and national series contender Sam Murray and is fifth in the overall classification, again behind Murray.
