HRT driver mark Skaife could become the most successful driver in Australian Touring Car history if he wins this weekend’s Pukekohe round of the V8 Supercar series.
April 18, 2007, 6pm. Holden Racing Team leader Mark Skaife could become the most successful driver in Australian V8 Supercar history if he wins this weekend’s round at Pukekohe.
That would take him to 38 victories in rounds of the series.
When he won at Pukekohe last year, the Holden Commodore driver equalled the late Peter Brock’s record of 37 V8 Supercar or Touring Car series wins.
Skaife is one of the favourites for this weekend’s PlaceMakers V8 Supercar round at Pukekohe Park Raceway.
As well as winning in 2006, he finished second in 2001 and 2003, fifth in 2004 and sixth in 2002. He also qualified on pole in 2002 and 2004.
The HRT driver finished third in the last round in Perth.
"I’m very happy with the outcomes in Perth,” he said this week. “I found myself in the right spot at the right time to reel in Rick (Kelly) for second and get to chase down (round winner Garth Tander).
“However I couldn’t get close enough to him, and discretion was the better part of valour. The whole race weekend was excellent for HRT, and I'm sure there are even better things to come."
