Teenage Kiwi, Shane van Gisbergen, turned heads with a mature display of driving to finish all three races in last weekend’s mayhem-hit Australian V8 Supercar round at Sydney’s Oran Park.
He qualified the Team Kiwi Racing Ford Falcon 29th, and worked his way to a 20th place finish in Race 1 on Saturday.
He followed that with an outstanding 13th place in Race 2 on Sunday, and came home 24th in Sunday’s rain-hammered Race 3, scoring series points for TKR on his Supercar debut.
Team owner David John was more than happy with van Gisbergen’s drive in his first-ever V8 Supercar race on Saturday.
“This weekend is about learning the ropes,” John said. “It was Shane’s first race, he had his first ever pitstop and this was the first time the new (TKR) crew had worked together in a race situation.
“Frankly I was delighted at how it all went. Shane was tremendous. He drove within himself but showed a maturity well beyond his years.
“A number of our sponsors were also here today to support us and Shane – and were extremely impressed.
“Shane and the team nailed their pitstop and that was a big help in pushing him up the field to 20th. To finish your first ever V8 Supercar race in the top 20 is a real achievement.”
