Saldana closes Outlaws gap

US ace who raced at Western Springs this summer wins World of Outlaws feature.

February 25, 2007. Friday’s World of Outlaws Sprint Car honours at Thunderbowl Speedway in Tulare, California, were claimed by Indiana racer Joey Saldana.

Driving a car owned by NASCAR star Kasey Kahne, Saldana won the 35-lap feature race ahead of veteran Jac Haudenschild to take the $US10,000 victory.

Haudenschild led the opening 23 laps until Saldana completed the winning move in heavy traffic.

Top qualifier Tim Shaffer finished third with Jason Meyers and Terry McCarl next.

Defending World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz needed to use a provisional start to make the A-main before advancing from 25th starting position to finish 12th.

Saldana’s win has closed Schatz’s series’ lead to just three points.

Racing continues at Thunderbowl on Sunday, NZ time.
