Runaway win for Burdett

Aucklander Michael Burdett came from row two to dominate the first race at this afternoon’s Mike Pero series race meeting at Teretonga.

March 10, 2007, 3.15pm. Michael Burdett drove to a runaway win in the MTA Formula Ford race at Teretonga Park, near Invercargill, today. Burdett, who started from the second row of the grid, was in the lead by the end of lap one.

Pole-winner Sam MacNeill made a blinder of a start, but Caine Lobb drove around him in the looping corner off the main straight to lead into the Castrol Esses.

In the reshuffle at the back of the circuit, Burdett came out first, ahead of MacNeill and Lobb.

By the end of lap two, Burdett had an increasing lead, and by mid-race was as many as 10 car lengths ahead of MacNeill and John Whelan who were squabbling over second place. Lobb had dropped out of the race.

Whelan established himself in second and crossed the line ahead of MacNeill and Daniel Jilesen.

Invercargill schoolboy Damon Leitch (14) finished near the rear of the field in his debut in national level racing.
